What about when someone calls me and they do not have a TTY?
If someone calls you and they do not have a TTY, give the caller your state's toll-free TRS number and ask them to call back through the TRS. The TRS will call you, and you can then use VCO throughout the call. The CA will type to you what the other person says.
Does VCO automatically translate between voice and text?
No. VCO requires the use of a TTY or TRS. During a VCO call through the TRS, the CA types the other person's spoken words and you can read what is said on your display. During a direct VCO call, the other person types the message on a TTY.
Do VCO calls cost more than regular calls?
VCO does not cost anything! The TRS service is provided toll-free. Local calls are free. Long distance calls incur the same charges as standard voice conversations of the same duration, distance, and time of day.
Where can I learn more about VCO?
Contact your state's TRS and ask them about the specific VCO options available to you, such as 2-line VCO and user profiles. Your state's TRS number can be found in the front of your local telephone directory.
Will I need new or different home or office phone number for VCO?
No. You can use same phone number.
Which TRS phone numbers do I use?
As a VCO user, you will need to use TTY phone number and the caller will need to use voice phone number.
