Activities that Stimulate Phonemic Awareness and Speech Recognition
This manual and CD set was designed for parents and professionals working with children age 5 and younger. You can photocopy from the manual or use the CD to print activities for listening around the house and throughout a child’s day. The manual includes a simple, complete guide to selecting appropriate listening goals and avoiding potential listening pitfalls of dependency, learned helplessness and habitual patterns of communication.
Games, crafts, books, and other activities are organized to progress along a hierarchy that will reduce dependency on context and set size, acoustic highlighting, word position, and number of elements. Ultimately, experiences that are appropriate, yet challenging, result in increased progress and confidence in trying more difficult listening tasks.
Reproducible materials include:
Mobiles
Nursery rhyme sequence pictures
Nursery rhyme activities
Puppets
Flip books
Iron on transfers for pillows, socks and beanbag dolls
Games and crafts for everyday vocabulary
Parent tips on hearing and audiograms
Charts to measure progress
Educators may reproduce simple parent handouts on ideas for listening during mealtime, bedtime, and other routine activities. Compatible with any PC or Mac system. (Adobe Reader included on CD.)
